Sega - Founded in 1940

The Early Years

Sega Started out as a coin operated business primarily focusing on the automatic photo booth business up to the 1960's. At that point they pointed towards pinball and stand alone electro mechanical games. By the 1980's Sega was in the arcade market and had some very popular games such as Zaxxon and Outrun

SG-1000

In 1983 Sega released it's first stand alone family gaming system. The system did moderately well in Asia and Australia but was never released in North America. This system was followed up by the SK-1100 and the SG-3000.

Sega Master System

The Sega Master system was first introduced to North america in 1986. It did ok but was trounced by Nintendo in the marketing wars. It did however fair very well in South America and Europe. It was discontinued in North America in 1991, Europe 1996 and Brazil in 2000.

The Sega Genesis.

Introduced in 1989 to North America

The Sega Genesis was very popular from the get go. It had a 65% share of the North American market for a short time. They made several different models and add-ons for this system but it could never quite beat the Super Nintendo overall . Although viewed as a success by SEGA it's lack holding power caused it's eventual downfall. The best thing to come out of this Model was the SEGA Mascot. Sonic the Hedgehog. A very cool character when compared to Mario. This propelled Sega to new heights in all markets.

.

Sega Saturn

1995

A Great effort on Sega's part to enter the 32 bit world. The Saturn was released after the Sony Playstation and Nintendo 64. This caused Saturn to fail right out of the gate. With very limited software and third party development the project was abandoned 2 years later

Sega Dreamcast

1999

Due to a very successful marketing campaign and it's ability to get into the market before Sony's PS2 and the Gamecube the dreamcast sold 500,00 units in it's first week. With a competitive price point and growing game catalog Sega had its first hit since genesis 1. Although short lived success caused the eventual downfall of Sega dreamcast being supported by Sega ended in 2001. Sega now is a game developer only. Vowing never to re-enter the console wars again.
